eLearning to save on gas! |
With gas prices climbing up the roof, distance learning has increased according to many in the US.
In an article of the Star-Telegram, in Texas, called “As gas prices rise, virtual college gains popularity”, John Austin states on July 25th 2008: “There’s no reason high gas prices should keep you away from campus — at least not a virtual campus. The increased availability of distance learning classes and programs means that students can earn degrees, including doctorates, without commuting to or living on campus.”
In Philadelphia, Matt Purchla states similar remarks in the Metro on June 24th 2008 : “High gas prices and a struggling economy are contributing to an increase in registration for online courses this summer. Online classes, or “distance education”, is currently the fastest growing component in all of higher education. Schools have been noticing a steady increase in registration over the past five years, but those numbers have skyrocketed recently, officials say.”
The same subject makes headlines in New Jersey with an article entitled: “Online enrollment up with gas prices” on July 22nd 2008. In this article, Felicia Homan, noticing the impact of technology on affordable education, writes about the situation in these words: “Trend or not, the increase shows that college students are taking the necessary measures to gain the best education at the lowest cost. Technological advancements in recent years have enabled students to take a wide variety of courses online without sacrificing the quality of their education.”
On different blogs you will find comments such as: “Here's another way high gas prices are changing the way we live. More college students are opting to take courses online to cut the days they have to commute to class.”
But is the increase in enrollment really due to high gas prices? Another fellow blogger responds: “ High gas prices are not the only explanation for rising enrollment in online classes. At some colleges, more courses in more subjects are offered over the Internet today.”
Making headlines across the map, words such as “pain at the pump”, “change our driving habits” and “being green” are commonly used and are considered influential factors in the increasing popularity of distance learning.
